planamikebarry: My first (and probably last) half marathon
The deed is done. One hour 32 minutes and 12 seconds (i felt everyone of those seconds!). So for those of you kind enough to make 3 pledges for sub 1.40, go DO! The whole Donation process has been brilliant, everyone has been effusive about it and it really helped me keep going when training was tough to juggle and today when the last 2 miles were horrible but 129 voices kept shouting keep going you lazy old sod. Thanks everyone for your support, really appreciate it.
At last my first half marathon and your pledges to be a little greener (NOT CASH!) are going to make me do it (just click on the 'do something' button to the right to make the pledges after you've read the few words below)
Why? Guilt at yelling at Alex, Becky and Jo Jo to try harder with their (many) sporting activities, while I watch on from the sidelines? Lots of brave mates who've done their (much greater) challenges? Need to get fitter? Or just Susan finally tiring of a lazy husband and ambush signing me up without me knowing? I'll let you work it out.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. I'm doing it. And you can help. I'm pretty competitive but with my age and lack of running talent, busting a gut is going to be the difference between 393rd or 412th i.e. not exciting enough to make me really try. I need a different kind of motivation and that's where you come in. I want you to make pledges to do a little bit more for the planet and the faster I run the more you'll do (but hey my pain will make it worthwhile).
So here's the pitch. Make 3 pledges. If I run 1 hr 50 mins or slower you only need to do 1. If I do 1 hr 45 mins you do 2 and if i go under 1 hr 40 mins you do all 3! As a reference I've only run one timed race in my life - 44.5 mins for a 10km. So this time i'm doing more than twice the distance + a mile long hellish hill. If you're feeling nervous about the risk of doing 3 pledges just look at the sea of grey hair on my head and be re-assured!
So thanks for your help. Make the pledges. Lets explore how together a lot of small changes can make a big difference. Ask others to join the 'fun' and I'll suffer for all our futures! You can follow the pain at @planamikebarry
Thanks
Mike
HOW IT WORKS:
Browse the DoActions and find 3 that suit you, then make your pledge(s). Some are really easy; others take a bit more effort.
You only pledge to do your chosen action for two months and all the information you need is provided here on The DoNation, making it really easy to complete. You'll receive a few helpful reminders and then at the end of the two months you'll be asked to confirm how you got on.
So please, get doing!
Thank you!!
