We’re looking for a techie or two

The DoNation is growing up. Things are getting serious. We’re ready to build a tech team.

We’ve recently been invested in by Wayra UnLtd and are now looking to develop a new platform that will help us to better meet the demand, scale our business, and massively grow our impact.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for someone to help us with our technical strategy, to help us plan out the roadmap and architecture for building the next stage and beyond. They’ll shape and craft our product, really taking ownership of it on all levels – from moulding the strategy to getting their hands dirty writing some code.

It's a greenfields project - you'll be starting from scratch, building a system just the way you want it; we're expecting to build in Python or Ruby, but are open to other suggestions too.

The current site is built in Drupal. Whilst we're looking to do away with this, if you have enough experience in Drupal to be able to help maintain the site in the interim that'd be a big bonus.

A passion for sustainability would also win you a gold star.

What'll it involve?

Here’s a rough list of things the role(s) will involve:

  • Develop the technical strategy and roadmap
  • Designing the system architecture
  • Technical product owner, i.e. managing the backlog, speccing new features, prioritising feedback
  • Hire and manage a team of developers
  • Costing and forecasting of tech budget
  • Assisting with sales and investment pitches
  • Technical integrations with third parties
  • Writing code 
  • General sys-admin

It might be part time, it might be full time. It's quite likely to form two seperate roles: an architect and a lead developer. That’s up for discussion, and depends on what skills and experience you bring.

Who are we?

The DoNation is all about sustainability and behaviour change. It’s built on the belief that making the world a better place is about action, not cash – so we help people to make simple changes and inspire others to do the same.

We do this in two ways:

1.    Donate by Doing: a charity sponsorship site that replaces cash with action. It’s like JustGiving but instead of donating money you pledge to do something good, like cycling to work or composting your old food.

2.    Do Good for Business: programmes to engage employees in sustainability where teams compete to do the most pledges. This is the revenue-generating arm of the business.

We’ve had over 6,000 users so far but aim to reach 100,000 within the next three years by working with many more companies – both here in the UK and abroad. We’ll need a new platform to do that.

The team is small right now but we’re supported by a fantastic team of advisors and some incredible interns, and are gearing up to go through a bit of a growth spurt this year.
