Do Mo

When people started using The DoNation to raise sponsorship for Movember, I have to say I had a tingle of discomfort. Movember is all about raising awareness and money for prostrate and testicular cancer, an incredibly worthy cause that I definitely would not like The DoNation to detract from.
But then, on digging a little deeper, I realised that we actually have a lot in common. Movember is primarily about raising awareness, not money. They are trying to encourage people to reduce their risks of developing cancers by being active, eating more healthily, giving up smoking.
Snap.
So when I saw that Alan Hayes was Doing the Do for Movember, I, alongside his 34 sponsors, embraced his challenge. Here's his first update on his Mo growing experience thus far...

I’m passionate about running, health and fitness. My personal journey is from 100kg & unfit to 83kg and 2hr 59m marathon in 4 yrs. One of my greatest joys is in finding ways to inspire others to act positively.
Movember offers an opportunity to use a different subject than my usual to engage and inspire. It gives me a new story to tell – and we all like good stories.
Connecting with DoNation is a great way to highlight the need for action – not just words, cash and/or aspirations – whether we want to improve our own health or that of the planet. More importantly, it highlights the imperative to improve our behaviours.
Already, it has been great fun. Stories that generate conversations that generate curiosity that generate pledges and actions – a great virtuous circle is beginning to form.
At a practical level, my Mo is getting ticklish. I drove to work this morning and spent 20 minutes removing traces of marmalade. Note to self – wash Mo thoroughly after a curry!
Growing a Mo and keeping it is more complex that you might imagine.
I’m also committed to going completely vegetarian for a month after my IGD colleagues helped me crash through my 1,000kg target. That will happen in Jan/Feb ’13 – a great way to continue the dialogues.
If you think that's a ticklish ‘tash worth supporting, then sponsor Alan now!.
