Sinead Brophy: Half Way to One Hundred Challenge
I am making my way to being a hundred....so my 50th year is my halfway milestone. To celebrate, get me fit for the next 50 years and hopefully inspire more women to have a go I am doing a different sports event every month of 2014. I am working on the basis 'if I can do it anyone can'. I'd like your support through actions, not money. I'll let you know each month what is on and you can get pledging with DoNation! First event The Hangover 5 a winter X country race in Worthing was cancelled as course flooded and gales forecast. Instead I did the Lamberhurst New Years Day off road 10k. Off road turned out to be on road as off road flooded.........and boy was it spilling down. My fair weather support team refused to leave the car hence race photo below. Waiting for my official time but managed about 56 minutes road in off road trainers, not to be recommended.
Next Challenge event 8th February - hope weather better but love it wild really!
Getting women involved in sport is a big challenge. Over 80% of women do too little physical activity to benefit their health. But plenty of women like sport and often demand outstrips supply. Find out more about the challenges of getting more women into sport http://www.wsff.org.uk/the-challenge/the-challenge-women and the equally huge obstacles faced by elite female athletes. Today only 5% of sports media coverage is devoted to women's sport and just 0.5% of commercial investment goes to women only sport. However, over 60% of sports fans say they would like to see more women’s sport on the TV. http://www.wsff.org.uk/the-challenge/the-challenge-elite-sportswomen. But it all starts when we are young. Girls start doing less activity than boys as soon as they're eight or nine. By the time they're 14, only 12% of girls are active enough. And by the time they leave school, they have habits and perceptions that are hard to shift.
